Discovering Opportunities to Digitize the Ferrari F1 Team Operations
Infor is a software provider and sponsor of the Ferrari F1 team. As part of a client services exploration discussion, I was part of a team sent to explore digital tools that could optimize the operation of the F1 Team.

In order to define opportunities to optimize the operation of Ferrari’s F1 team, we met with each of the departments from the F1 team operation - which involved R&D + manufacturing, logistics, maintenance, driver training and pitstop crew management. During our interview session, we discussed what challenges each of the departments faced and what solutions they would ideally need. The summary of these findings are below. Due to tight security constraints in the Ferrari office, we were not allowed to take pictures, record or film any of our insights gathering, so our analysis was restricted to notes only.

Together with the client, we prioritized which challenges we wanted to target based on which solutions would have the most impact on cost and winning more races. We ultimately decided to target the following areas.

The New Ferrari F1 Operational Vision
In order to provide a comprehensive view of the F1 team operation, capture areas to target, and identify underlying technology needs, I produced a digital eco-system map outlining the future vision of the team operations. This helped ourselves and the client to orient the overall solution.

Better real time cost control on vehicle production
We discovered that due to the high rate of change in vehicle R&D, Ferrari has poor oversight of vehicle cost, becoming a major pain point for project managers. Ferrari needs a tool to aggregate information from its ERP systems and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tool to have better visibility on real time product cost.
PIT STOP CREW METRICS
Drive pit stop crew performance by improving their speed and efficiency to win races
Pit stop crew training tool which will provide metrics and date on their pitstop performance, and videos to watch their form. Potential to extend out or build into an team management tool.

MAINTENANCE AID
Better feedback for vehicle maintenance
Ferrari will often hold skype web video conferences with a mechanic to view the vehicle condition and instruct the mechanic on what to do. Leveraging augmented reality and AR headsets could be beneficial to aiding in better maintenance and communication between mechanics and headquarters.
